Watch

[This post is part of my series on Mike McDermott quotes from the movie Rounders]
“I was watching when the cards came out. That’s an old habit with me, like breathing. I watch the cards also, but I watch the players reacting to the cards. I was watching their eyes when they checked their river cards. Their faces tell you everything.”

I continue to be amazed at how most players – pros even – focus their attention on the cards. Their hole cards. The community cards. These players miss all the tells because they are busy looking at the cards and not the player.
People say all the time that they play the player. How is this possible when they watch the cards instead of the player? The cards are almost secondary.
