Three Tens Tommy

I am heads-up to the flop against a solid player. I am in position against this true grinder.

This player, Tommy is his name, raised the $2 blind to $50 preflop.

The flop comes Jd-10c-3c.

“I am all-in,” he says to me.

“Really?” I reply.

“Yeah.”

“I flopped top pair, ace kicker, with a nut flush draw,” I continue.

I could just tell by the way he sat there that he flopped a set.

It is hard to put him on pocket Jacks … but I have seen the case card too many times to count.

“You have a set of 10s,” I tell him.

“Yep.”

“Well, I am not going to draw against a made hand. I fold.”

I show the A-Jc.

He smiles and shows me 10-10.

Calling a player’s hand earns me respect at the table. Sometimes, at the expense of getting action.

But, on that day, I earned a good friend. Tommy and I have been close ever since.

Alltop. I don't know how I got there either.

  1. Really nice story. =). I think it also highlights that poker isn’t always just about profit. It’s an important distinction to note, that different people play for different reasons – and those intentions affect the play as well.

  2. Thanks Derrick … alot of guys would have called in my spot … but I like to know I am putting it in good. I knew I was behind and had to get lucky to win.

    Thanks for reading!!
